Abstract
In 1989, Monica Vitti made her directorial film debut with Scandalo segreto. This essay aims to reconstruct the authorial approach of Vitti throughout her career and especially in the eighties. As the article illustrates, her performances and interpretations through different works and media, including television, reveal the figure of an actress in search of “personaggeµ, specific characters who can deliver women from stereotypical roles imposed by a patriarchal society. Her acting is further refined to produce figures of complex women, who are not crushed in melodrama.
