Abstract

A tessera nummularia was found during an excavation campaign conducted in 2016 by the musée du Louvre, in cooperation with the Soprintendenza speciale per i Beni archeologici di Roma, in the antique city of Gabii. The tessera is in a good state of preservation and the text can easily be reconstructed. It is an important specimen that adds to the corpus of tesserae nummulariae found in a precise stratigraphic context and provides valuable information on the financial life of the late republican Gabii. Its place of discovery, nearby Iuno Gabina’s temple, supports the studies initiated by R. Herzog and J. Andreau’s works on banking in the Roman world and on the establishment of financiers in the vicinity of sanctuaries
