Abstract

The first written documentation of the Italian expression roba da chiodi dates back to the beginning of the 18th century and is unanimously attributed by the repertoires to the Tuscan doctor and polemicist Anton Francesco Bertini. In this contribution we put forward the hypothesis that Bertini was not only the occasional user of the oldest known example of the saying, but he was instead its actual creator.
