Abstract
This study examines the role of caregivers in the care pathways of chronic patients and the value patients place on them. Using data from a survey conducted by the Management and Healthcare Laboratory of the Sant’Anna School in Pisa, experiences reported by heart failure patients are explored with respect to the role of the informal caregiver and the support they received. The results show the importance of the caregiver in meeting the care and assistance needs of the chronically ill person. In particular, qualitative analysis of patients’ comments confirms the importance of the caregiver in disease surveillance, personal care, home management, and psychological and affective dimensions. The results suggest the need for support, advocacy and training interventions to address the caregiving difficulties faced by caregivers.
