Abstract
A challenge for Social Services in Central-Southern Italy is working with the parents of separated minors. In 2018-2019, 55 qualitative interviews were conducted with professionals involved at various levels within the child protection system in Lazio, Campania, and Puglia. The aim was to gather their opinions regarding the relationship between birth parents and the child protection system. The interviews revealed a widespread belief that the actions of the institutions are misunderstood and perceived by parents as punishment and a mark of family failure. Various implications have emerged for Social Services, guardianship operators, and researchers concerning the practices, policies, and organization of child protection services
