Abstract

The present work analyzes the translation into Albanian of the Canto XXXIII from Dante’s Paradiso. Early translations of entire canti or fragments of them, extrapolated from the three cantiche of the Divine Comedy, already appear in Albania during the first five years of the 1920s. Nevertheless, the first unabridged version of the text was published in the 1960s. The translation work was carried out by Pashko Gjeçi who was an expert of his own idiom and a passionate enthusiast of the Italian language. Gjeçi’s masterfully crafted version preserves scrupulously the high content of Dante’s masterpiece, reproducing at the same time its lines, verse form, rhythm and rhyme scheme with an easy and essential language, often enriched by neologisms relevant to the original text
