Abstract
This contribution presents, compares and discusses the notions of linguistic economy and redundancy as they have been introduced in the Twentieth Century linguistic debate. More specifically the paper illustrates the main positions held by G. K. Zipf and A. Martinet and the role and centrality these notions assume in Tullio De Mauro's works appearing redefined and specified in a new theoretical and methodological framework.
