Abstract

This paper analyses the typescript with Calvino's own hand emendations delivered by the author to Einaudi editors. This typescript appears as being the intermediate stage between the two autographic versions and the "editio princeps" printed in the "Coralli" collection. A systematic emendation concerns the elimination of every reference to the eucalyptol (with the exception of the last page of the novel) because Calvino had found out this plant was only imported to Italy in 1810 and he wished therefore to avoid the anachronism. The paper also dwells upon narratological and stylistic reasons behind other eliminated or corrected parts.
