Abstract
Trees are undoubtedly important in The Baron, but their role should not be overestimated. The gaze of the novel's hero is from the trees, not on the trees. Calvino is mainly interested in the condition of staying above, so much so that occasionally he falls in botanical inaccuracies. Calvino is so interested in the condition of staying above the ground that occasionally he falls in botanical inaccuracies. More detailed descriptions of trees are found in other works, such as "From the Opaque", or in the reportages from Mexico. On the other hand, in "The Road to San Giovanni", Cosimo's character - surprisingly - reminds us of some features of the author's own father.
