Abstract

Given the creative energy of mottos and proverbs, in which artistic and popular literature share parenthood, this paper underlines the close relationship between these and the novella form in Basile's Lo cunto de li cunti. Our analysis highlights how the originality of the text lies in the meta-narrative importance given to proverbs and short stories by the author. The fluidity of his blend of various different traditions and registers (fables, novellas, theatre etc.) is the key to a deep but light-hearted narration full of surprises and moral levity.
