Abstract
The area in the volcanic crater around Lake Nemi has a very long history of sacredness linked first to the forest and then to the cult of Diana. First federal sanctuary of the Latins at war against Rome and then transformed into the largest terraced sanctuary in Roman Republican Italy, the sanctuary of Diana has always experienced a symbiosis with the surrounding natural landscape. The presence of Caligula will bring heavy and ephemeral changes to this ensemble inspired by Egyptian models which will also be expressed in the sanctuary and not only in the famous ships.
