Abstract
"...seismic restoration of historical centers has to include all aspects regarding both safety and preservation..." (A. Giuffrè). The term safety can be misleading for common people: safety is not the same as certainty, it is a probabilistic concept that implies the evaluation of the probability of failure; it could be defined failure assessment. This last definition might be understandable as a more realistic message to a broader audience. Rebuild as it was and where it was? Repair damage as in the past? Strengthen as before? The wisdom, the serious damages occurred, and the current guidelines suggest different solutions. The main task of all of us, is to find them.
