Abstract
The author examines two specific paintings on wood by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, "Polittico della Maddalena" and "Piccola Maestà", both preserved in Siena, proposing to identify the saints who flank the Virgin not with the traditional Marta or Dorotea, but with Matelda, the character from Dante's Comedy inhabitant of Earth Purgatory.
