Abstract
The article defends the persisting modernity of the goal of satisfying a set of basic needs that are essential for human dignity. From this key-idea, it derives three implications in terms of policy design. They are strengthening the infrastructure of social services moving towards a vision of welfare as a common good, while legitimizing the right to a minimum income; fostering universalism and promoting an «active» duty to cooperate towards collective ends.
