Abstract
This paper explores four different semantic domains of the word distance. The domains are: space, time, alterity, conflict. In each of them, the word distance has a different value and a different function, with small but significant shifts in its meaning. In addition, different rhetorical constructs are connected to these domains, which often take over the use value of the term distance and connote its meaning in a decisive way, especially for relationships between individuals
