Abstract
The essay examines the contents of the new agreement between Italy and the Holy See (2019) concerning the civil recognition of the academic degrees in ecclesiastical disciplines granted by the Faculties approved by the Holy See. The analysis is carried out in the light of the recent developments both in the Italian legislation and in international Conventions on the matter. It takes into account the peculiar position of religious studies in the Italian academic framework, which is marked by the abolition of the faculties of theology dating back to 1873.
