Abstract
The anniversary, in the year 2023, of the thirty years since the approval of the statute which introduced for the local level of government the election by universal and direct suffrage (as well as of the Mayor) of the President of the Province constitutes an opportunity to reflect on the Provincial Institution. Starting from the legislative innovations of the nineties and up to the legislative proposals presented during the 19th legislature, the essay intends to observe the evolution of the Province in the Italian legal system and therefore reflect on the reform prospects also taking into consideration the constitutional case law.
