Abstract
The study introduces a measure for school burnout (School Burnout Inventory - SBI, by Samlela-Aro, Kiuru, Leskinen, Nurmi, 2009) and provides a first contribution to Italian validation of SBI. Aims of the study were: a) to analyze the factorial solution of the SBI on Italian students sample; b) to evaluate the divergent and convergent validity of the SBI by analyzing its correlations with the Engagement scale (Schaufeli, et al., 2002) and CDI scores (Kovacs, 1982); c) to analyze gender differences on SBI scores. Participants were 274 students (male 132; female 142; age M = 14.62; DS = .87) recruited in Italian high schools. Results showed a three-factor solution (cynicism, inadequacy and emotional exhaustion) of SBI. Finally, convergent and divergent validity were found between SBI and depressive symptoms and school engagement. No significant differences were found by considering students gender.
