Abstract

The article starts from an analysis of Giovanni Fontana’s book (2020) on Elsa Morante’s novel Menzogna e sortilegio, which draws inspiration from Jean Rousset’s famous study Leurs yeux se rencontrèrent (1981). Both books investigate the scenes of encounters in novels of different times and thus to a certain extent fall within the field of thematic literary criticism (which has been brilliantly studied by Remo Ceserani). Fontana explores the encounters in Menzogna and sortilegio also from a philological perspective by offering an analysis of Morante’s manuscripts.
